Five women that inspired me to dance

For the occasion of International Women’s Day, here are five women that will inspire you to dance regardless of your level, ability, weight or background. From confidence, determination, humility or connection, each of them has their unique message to bring.

1. Griselle Ponce

New York, USA
Style: NY-style Salsa on 2
Inspiration: Let your personality shine

Griselle’s elegant style invites you to embrace your “inner diva” and dance in a way that allows your own personality to shine. I had the chance to participate in her Diva Challenge during the New York International Salsa Congress in 2016. Her smile and confidence is infectious!

2. Liliana Belfiore

Buenos Aires, Argentina
Style: Classical ballet
Inspiration: Dance for a deeper connection with others

Ranked as one of the top three ballerinas of her time, Liliana Belfiore was prima ballerina at Argentina’s Teatro Colon and the London Festival Ballet (today the English National Ballet). She now dedicates her time teaching and promoting various dances across the country, and working to make dance accessible to everyone. I was lucky to take on of her classical ballet classes and interview her in Buenos Aires. She believes that regardless of the style, dance offers a unique connection with others, even if just a momentary glance exchanged with your dance partner.

3. Diana Marcela

Cali, Colombia
Style: Cali-style Salsa
Inspiration: Dance is the reward of hard work and determination

A champion dancer from the Combinacion Rumbera dance school, Diana was one of the most encouraging and sensitive teachers I ever came across. Her patience taking me through Cali-style’s intricate footwork got me addicted to this joyful salsa style. She taught me to always value hard work and the determination to learn over my dance level or ability.

4. Florencia Daluisio

Buenos Aires, Argentina
Style: Tango
Inspiration: Never lose your sense of humility and wonder

For a struggling beginner, the tango world of Buenos Aires is nothing short of intimidating. Florencia, a professional tango dancer whom I met one night in a Milonga, is not only a beautiful dancer whose graceful and romantic steps will transport you into a dream, but is also extremely humble. She shows a sense of wonder, admiration and kindness for everyone she meets regardless of their dance level, with her dance style radiating these qualities.

5. Esmeralda

Havana, Cuba
Style: Cuban Son and Salsa
Inspiration: Savour the music with each step

While learning with Baila Habana in Cuba, Esmeralda taught me how to release the stress of worrying and focus on savouring the music with each step. For a total beginner, reaching this level feels like a liberation. She believes that music is the guide to movement so we are taken away by the beat and melody. This video of us practicing the basics of Son Cubano shows how you can savour the music and express your femininity with even the most simple steps.
