While working as a happiness researcher at the UN and gaining insights into happiness in schools, I realised that we as adults need to learn to be happy, just as much as children, if not more.
I noticed that people – across the world – had become so serious. As they worked so hard, they had lost touch with their lighthearted playful side, and what really mattered to them most.
Their daily struggles felt like mountains that they had to climb, without even realising that they had little interest in even getting to the top. As they let time pass them by, all they were doing was living someone else’s dream.
The truth was, they weren’t climbing THEIR mountains, chasing THEIR dreams or fighting for THEIR goals.
They were chasing happiness based on a definition that somebody else had created for them.
They hadn’t defined happiness on their own terms.
Like many others, despite having my dream job, something that so many would crave for, I lacked joy in my life. I was like the proverbial cobbler. I lacked the shoes needed to take the first steps on the path towards happiness.
So what obstacles, like so many others, did I face?
A scarcity mindset leads us to overvaluing material possessions and the apparent happiness they bring. It keeps our focus on what we don’t have rather than on feeling grateful for what is already ours. Yes, living comfortably is one of life’s joys. But we easily get used to “stuff” – whether it’s a new purchase, a pay rise or promotion – and then return to our happiness baseline. What does this mean? That these things might bring you joy for a little while, but they won’t bring you lifelong fulfilment as you go back to your baseline. This baseline is what we’re looking to improve in this course.
You are not what you do or what you have, but who you ARE. Most often when we meet people for the first time we ask: “So what do you do?” But would the answer to that question (e.g. mother, millionaire or manicurist) really be a deserving summary of a person? According to happiness science, we all have 24 character strengths – each to varying degrees. These strengths, along with our values, our passions and the beliefs that we stand for will always tell us more about ourselves than any form of validation from others. This course takes the approach to uncover your strengths, values and passions in building your self-worth around your very own happiness blueprint.
It’s a lot harder to fight for where we want to be when we don’t accept where we are now. Whether that means accepting we’re stuck in a rut, funk or the monotony of daily life. Whether it’s the lack of impact our work has, or our time and energy being ‘managed’ by people with unempathetic leadership skills, we tend to avoid awareness and acceptance of what drains and frustrates us. But once you accept yourself where you are, and your circumstances, you will give yourself a solid foundation to start building your happiest reality. This course empowers you to make the choice to be the architect of your own happiness, so that YOU can design your happiest life.
Hi, I’m Alienor Salmon! Your guide on the path to Redefining your Happiness.
Seven years ago I found myself in a long period of sadness and personal loss. I had somehow lost my own sense of happiness and searched for what could possibly spark joy and light up that little flame inside of me. In the depths of my sadness I asked a friend: “what would you do if you could do anything without the limit of time and money”. She asked the question back to me and I realised I didn’t know the answer. I closed my eyes and listened to my heart, which is where I found my answer: to leave everything to dance around the world.
Now you may think I had a head start. After all, my work was all about researching happiness. But along the way, I had gotten caught up in traditional notions of success, and forgotten to redefine happiness based on what makes my heart sing. As I embarked on my own happiness journey, I discovered what really matters, and what I would most remember as the precious moments of my life, by living by my values and tapping into the beauty of connection to self, others and the world.
