Tango is a partner dance from the rio del plata area, the river that separates Argentina and Uruguay. Its creation is the result of a fusion of influences with the influx of immigrants to Argentina in the 19th Century, including waltz, polka, tango flamenco and other styles. Lesser known are its African origins, influenced by styles such as candombe, with theories pointing to the word tango coming from tambo, a musical gathering among African slaves.
Buenos Aires, the mecca for tango aficionados, offers countless options every day of the week to take classes or dance tango in a milonga, where it is danced socially. The website and app Hoy Milonga offers comprehensive listings milongas and clearly labels where classes and live music are included. You can also attend some of the city’s best tango shows, and while there are several options, my top picks are the historical Cafe de los Angelitos or the opulent and exclusive Rojo Tango show.
