In Cali, the world’s salsa capital, dancing is everywhere with an array of dance academies, bars, and clubs to choose from. The Cali style of salsa is noticeably different from other styles, with a lot of fast foot steps, skips, and kicks. Rather than being linear or circular, the basic consists of an open break, with the movement tending to be closed. Every year in the last year of December, the Feria de Cali takes place and is the city’s most important salsa event.
Cali is home to the most salsa academies in the world. Its famous Swing Latino school is known for having trained stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, and for making it as finalists on World of Dance. Many schools also act as foundations, with salsa having had a significant role in bringing youth into dance as an alternative to drugs and crime. My school of choice is Combinacion Rumbera for their dedicated work with underprivileged youth and kind and humble approach, which hasn’t stopped them from being anything but champions.
